Personally, purpose and exigence always confused me (navigate to exigence for more information) but I understand purpose not as the reason you are writing, but the goal of your writing. For example, the final Multimodal project’s exigence was me disliking how people viewed clean energy, especially nuclear energy. So that made my purpose to educate people about nuclear energy and persuade them into believing my opinion on the topic. Your purpose might have to change depending on what genre and media you are using, for instance if you are writing a scientific article your purpose would probably not be persuasion by purely education of you audience. While if you creating a blog post and follow its genre conventions then your purpose can be persuasion, education, entertainment or any other reason because it follows the genre conventions and media of a blog.
