Exigence

  • Definition: “The event or occurrence that prompts rhetorical discourse”

For me, exigence was tricky because I felt it was similar to purpose and stance. But through the course I gained a better understanding of what each element is and how they are unique. I feel like I truly got the meaning of exigence with the last major project. With the Multimodal Project I needed to understand what my exigence was besides the due date. What I mean is in a classroom/lecture setting the exigence is the professor, but we will not always be writing to a professor after we graduate so we must understand why we are writing. But I understood what exigence is when selecting my topic and understanding who I was writing to for the project. For the Multimodal Project I chose to discuss alternative energy focusing on nuclear energy, so I had to understand the exigence is not the professor assigning the work, but my desire to educate people about the safety of nuclear energy which is usually seen in a bad light.
